Free conversion of a classic space sim

Tie Fighter: Total Conversion is a game utility by AngelTFTC. This is a free-to-download mod that provides a complete overhaul to the classic 1994 space simulator TIE Fighter. It reimagines all its original campaigns and offers fantastic new visuals. It even comes with virtual reality (VR) support.

Tie Fighter: Total Conversion is not actually the original TIE Fighter. Instead, it is a mod for its sequel, X-Wing Alliance. What it does is port TIE Fighter's original menu and mission into the Alliance's more robust engine. Then, it uses another fan-made mod entitled X-Wing Alliance Upgrade to make everything look modern.

What is Tie Fighter: Total Conversion?

Back in the day, TIE Fighter was considered one of the best space simulator games for PC.  It boasted excellent graphics, brilliant dogfight mechanics, and a great mission design that players loved. Add in a Star Wars premise, and it has easily reached worldwide popularity. However, given the era of its release, everything looks outdated compared to today's games.

Here enters, Tie Fighter: Total Conversion. It is a fan-made mod that brings the game into the modern era, with updated visuals, textures, and more. While it features the 13 campaigns from the original game, the first eight now have newer ships and missions added to them. All in all, it has over 145 missions, including both the Defender of the Empire and Enemies of the Empire expansion packs.

More than that, TFTC will also include VR support thanks to the X-Wing Alliance project. The said project also made it possible for the game to have better and more modern visuals. However, as mentioned, this mod ports TIE Fighter to the X-Wing Alliance game. It requires the latter for players to enjoy the missions. Additionally, it requires the patch from X-Wing Alliance Update to experience better visuals.

Should you download it?

If you wish for a TIE Fighter remake or remaster, Tie Fighter: Total Conversion is for you. The utility overhauled the original game with its new missions and better visuals. Although, fans of the classic will also love that the creator retained the storyline and gameplay. Note, however, that this is a conversion and not the original title. It requires X-Wing Alliance and its updated mod to enjoy all the upgrades.
